My Own Song – original text by the composer
~ One of my earliest compositions, I wrote this piece (words and music) for the renowned Syracuse Children’s Chorus, for whom I was serving as accompanist at the time. It soon grew to be a favorite of choristers and audiences alike, and for nearly 30 years was something of a “signature” for this ensemble under the distinguished artistic leadership of Dr. Barbara Tagg. “My Own Song” closed every Spring Concert, and this performance was just such an event. I had been asked to accompany, and as I was taking my place at the piano, I was delighted to see that all alumni present in the audience had been invited to join current choristers on stage, as well. The music began, and I quickly realized, as I scanned the grand room and balconies, that I was hearing singing coming from all around me – not just onstage, but throughout the entire concert hall. Parents, siblings, and grandparents in attendance all knew every word and note by heart, and were spontaneously joining in song. It was one of the most moving experiences of my musical life – a memory I will always treasure. ~
