A Wedding Song

Love is patient and kind;

Love is not jealous or boastful;

it is not arrogant or rude.

Love does not insist on its own way;

it rejoices not in evil, but in the truth.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,

but have not love,

I am become as a sounding cymbal.

And though I give away all that I have,

but have not love,

I gain nothing.

And though I have the gift of prophecy,

and understand all mysteries,

and have all knowledge;

and though I have all faith,

so as to move mountains,

but have not love,

then I am nothing.

Love bears all things,

believes all things,

Love hopes all things,
endures all things.

Love never ends.

These three abide: faith, hope, love;

and the greatest of these is Love.

Composer’s comments:

“A Wedding Song” was composed as a special gift to be sung at the wedding of two of my dearest friends. I selected for my text, the 13th chapter of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, a favored scripture reading at weddings and a true “love” poem of the most inspiring and lyrical nature. I imagined that the properly-crafted musical setting would bring a new level of emotional intimacy to its utterance. So, I set about to compose a song that would reverently amplify the beauty of these timeless words, to create a true heart-on-sleeve, musical moment for my friends’ special day. Now, I am very proud and eager to publish and share this gift of song with many loving couples to include in their wedding memories. I believe it combines a level of dignity, elegance, and quiet grandeur befitting a solemn (and often religious) event, with a musical language that a wide range of wedding guests will find moving, memorable, and deeply touching.
