Composer’s comments:
“Jesus Loves Me” is widely considered to be the most famous children’s hymn in American history, taught not only to youngsters, but also new converts. It is woven into the tapestry of my own earliest childhood memories, and I have previously quoted the hymn in several choral and orchestral works, as a subtle, evocative gesture. I believe that hearing but a few notes of its humble melody has a way of tugging gently on the threads of so many memory tapestries – touching on the pulse point of youthful innocence when boundless faith came naturally. But in this setting, I seek to appeal directly to an adult audience with this timeless hymn as though at first hearing. Presented at a more solemn pace, this arrangement is adorned with a gracefully lilting accompaniment, unexpected harmonic transitions, and rhythmically engaging counter melodies. This is an adult version of a hymn so many adults know by heart from a simpler time. Especially with the addition of the timbre of children’s voices (optional), this arrangement of “Jesus Loves Me” echoes innocent youth, and invites grown-up listeners to revisit both the hymn, and the childlike faithfulness it inspired so many years ago.
