Go, pretty child, and bear this flower
Unto thy little Saviour;
And tell him, by that bud now blown,
He is the Rose of Sharon known.
When thou hast said so, stick it there
Upon his bib or stomacher;
And tell him, for good handsel too,
That thou hast brought a whistle new,
Made of a clean straight oaten reed,
To charm his cries at time of need;
Tell him, for coral, thou hast none,
But if thou hadst, he should have one;
But poor thou art, and known to be
Even as moneyless as he.
Lastly, if thou canst win a kiss
From those mellifluous lips of his;—

Composer’s comments:
When I first read this sweet verse by 17th century poet and cleric, Robert Herrick, I was enchanted by its unique voice, inviting the reader to imagine the Nativity through the innocent eyes of youth. The kindly speaker instructs a child — soon to meet the babe in a manger — about what to say to the infant King, while presenting Him with a blooming rose, a handmade toy, a pure heart, and humble adoration. In my setting, I sought to embrace the timeless, elegant beauty of the English choral tradition, which blends a deep affection for generations-old folk songs and reverence for the quiet dignity of Anglican liturgical music. I believe this Christmas anthem has a lilting, guileless grace, befitting the quaint text. In the spirit of the season, the listener is gifted with intricately-crafted rhythmic and harmonic treasures, delicately interwoven to create a heartfelt musical reflection of this inspiring glimpse at the Nativity.
